Arfvedsonite Mineral Set with Black Obsidian

 🍃Arfvedsonite is an iron-rich sodium silicate that forms a prism or needle-like crystals. It was named after the Swedish chemist Johan August Arfwedson, who discovered lithium. A very rare mineral, Arfvedsonite is popular among collectors, and the specimens mined in Malawi are particularly popular.

The formation of Arfvedsonite is a captivating tale of geological processes. This sodium amphibole silicate mineral crystallizes primarily in alkaline igneous rocks, such as nepheline syenites and peralkaline granites. Its genesis is linked to magma rich in sodium and deficient in silica. As the magma cools, the specific chemical environment allows for the formation of its unique crystal structure. The presence of iron, manganese, and other trace elements contributes to its distinctive dark coloration, often black or dark greenish-black. The mineral's bladed or prismatic crystals reflect the specific conditions of its creation within the Earth's crust.
